Biochar is a highly porous form of carbon, much like activated carbon. Its microporous structure holds onto water, air, and nutrients, while beneficial soil microbes colonise its huge surface area (which can be as much as two tennis courts per gram!).

As a sustainable alternative to peat, biochar retains moisture and permanently stores carbon in the soil.

Biochar:

  • Holds water
  • Stores nutrients
  • Provides aeration
  • Cultivates microbes
  • Increases microbial biodiversity
  • Retains organic matter
  • Sequesters contaminants

Add 5-20% biochar by volume to your soil for best results. Improvements are seen over time as biochar restructures the soil into a living ground of fertility. Biochar reduces the maintenance required for a healthy and vibrant soil, making it a perfect addition to pots and planting beds for any kind of plant.

Biochar has an alkaline pH due to its ash content, so take care to re-balance the acidity for ericaceous plants
