About Us

In the 1950s, with little more than determination, a trusted old tractor, and a vision for the future, Ian Hopkins set out from his parents’ nursery to create something of his own. Towing his equipment across the old Walton Bridge, Ian began a journey that would grow into generations of horticultural tradition.

Working alongside his wife, Brenda Hopkins, the early days were humble but full of ambition. Their first workspace was a simple shed built from straw bales with a tin roof — basic in every sense, but rich in hard work and optimism. There, they grew chrysanthemums, vegetables, and cut flowers, supplying local markets with carefully nurtured crops.

As the years passed, Ian’s passion for plants evolved. The nursery gradually shifted toward ornamental plants, laying the foundations for what would become Woodlark Nurseries. In the 1980s, the next generation arrived when Colin joined the business. With new energy came expansion: more greenhouses were built, production increased, and the nursery adapted to a changing industry.

Rather than relying solely on the bustle of Covent Garden Flower Market, Woodlark began supplying directly to garden centres, building stronger relationships with customers and growing plants specifically for retail presentation. Larger potted plants replaced traditional trays and boxes, reflecting the changing expectations of gardeners and retailers alike. During this time, the nursery also introduced one of its seasonal favourites — Christmas poinsettias — adding vibrant winter colour to its growing range.

In the 2010s, Graeme Hopkins joined the family business, continuing Woodlark’s steady and organic expansion alongside the flourishing garden centre trade. While the nursery has evolved dramatically since the days of the straw-bale shed, its core values have remained unchanged.

Today, Woodlark Nurseries continues to be guided by the same principles that inspired Ian and Brenda all those years ago: exceptional plant quality, genuine customer service, and a commitment to growing the business with care, integrity, and family pride.
